What does philanthropy mean?

Philanthropy Australia defines philanthropy as:

“

…the giving of money, time, information, goods and services, influence and voice to improve the wellbeing of humanity and the community.

In the arts and cultural sector, philanthropy is a type of private investment.

It’s when donors give money or in-kind support for creative work, without expecting anything in return. The donor might allow private or public thanks, but this is about recognition not exchange.

Philanthropy funds and supports:

  • everyday creative work
  • specific creative projects, such as education programs or access and equity initiatives
  • long-term creative goals, such as legacies, buildings or endowments.

What is a philanthropic gift?

A philanthropic gift is the support you get from a donor. It can be money, property, goods or services. It also includes volunteering, where donors give their time or skills to support what you do.

Philanthropic gifts, also known as donations, have these characteristics:

  • The donor gives money, property, goods, services, time or skills.
  • The giving is made voluntarily as an act of generosity.
  • The donor doesn’t receive or expect any benefits in return.

The benefits of philanthropy

Philanthropic gifts can offer more flexibility than other sources of support, particularly when they’re given without restrictions. This can give you more freedom to take creative risks and innovate.

Like other types of private investment, philanthropy can also:

  • give you another source of income
  • support you during funding or economic uncertainty
  • raise your profile and connect you to new audiences and potential supporters
  • help you make a social and cultural impact.

Philanthropy is all about relationships

Philanthropy is about people – you and your donors. It relies on:

  • trust
  • care
  • shared values.

When donors understand your work and why it matters, they’re more likely to support you. How you start and develop these relationships depends on the type of philanthropy.
