National Poet Laureate
Championing Australian poetry.
The National Poet Laureate is a three-year appointment that recognises an outstanding Australian poet whose work and cultural contribution have shaped contemporary poetry and its readership.
The Laureate serves as a national champion for Australian poetry, promoting its diversity and cultural significance through public programs, partnerships and community engagement.
The program connects more people with poetry and celebrates the contribution poets make to Australia’s cultural life.

We acknowledge the many Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and honour their Elders past and present.
We respect their deep enduring connection to their lands, waterways, and surrounding clan groups since time immemorial. We cherish the richness of First Nations peoples’ artistic and cultural expressions. We are privileged to gather on this Country and to share knowledge, culture and art, now and with future generations.
