About the program

For the Venice Biennale 2026, Creative Australia is engaging with state and territory galleries and museums to identify front of house and/or public engagement staff suitable to undertake cultural mediation for the Australia Pavilion (the Pavilion) during the Biennale in 2026.

Khaled Sabsabi is the artist commissioned to present in the Australia Pavilion, his exhibition is curated by Michael Dagostino. Read more about the 2026 artistic team here.

Cultural Mediation is a visitor engagement practice where art museum and gallery staff journey alongside the visitor in an act of mutual exchange. At the centre of this practice is the concept of the two-way art-centric conversation, which enables visitors to experience a richer engagement with art. Cultural Mediation breaks down barriers and allows gallery staff to work with audiences to unpack and interrogate visual art forms and ideas. Read more here.

Up to eight individuals will be selected (based across Australia) to participate in the program.

Participants of the program will:

  1. advance their skills in cultural mediation and arts administration
  2. be exposed to different approaches to contemporary visual arts engagement and presentation
  3. and build professional networks that aim to foster future collaborations and exchanges.

Participants will undertake cultural mediation training to prepare for their rostered placements in Venice. Creative Australia will manage and support participants of the program throughout the Biennale term.

Placement types

These placements are suitable for arts and creative workers who are currently engaged in front of house and/or public engagement museum and gallery practice with a minimum of 3 years' experience. Proficiency in Italian or other languages is desirable.

The nature of the Venice Biennale presents unique challenges for exhibition mediation and day to day management. Successful applicants will be expected to have a flexible ‘can-do’ approach to the environment and to the challenges associated with living and working in Venice, as well as a genuine interest in audience engagement.

We encourage applicants to consider any specific access needs or support required to assist in individual participation in this program. Where feasible access needs will be considered by Creative Australia.
